I learned systems by following what happened to the numbers.
Jen Galloway is a former controller, business systems professional, and author. Her career began in accounting, where she became the person colleagues relied on when the software, reports, or data did not behave as expected.
Accounting made the consequences visible. A decision made during a sale could affect access, billing, tax, reporting, and revenue later. A field that looked harmless to one department could determine whether another department could complete its work. A report could be mathematically correct and still answer the wrong question.
Jen’s first major software transition replaced an accounting system with one that connected to the company’s customer platform. Since then, her work has crossed customer relationship management, contracts and quoting, subscription and usage billing, tax, payment processing, planning, reporting, integrations, and AI-assisted automation.
That experience led to a practical conclusion: a reliable solution begins with a clear definition of the work. Once the result, responsibilities, information, and handoffs are understood, the organization can choose the right tool and know what that tool must reliably support.
Experience across business systems
Jen has worked with major platforms as well as smaller and specialized applications. The names of the tools changed. The questions that determined whether the work succeeded did not.
The warning signs are usually familiar
- The same correction is made over and over.
- Reports disagree even when each one appears accurate.
- A routine request depends on the one person who remembers how it works.
- Work stalls when responsibility moves between departments.
- A change fixes one problem and creates another downstream.
- Teams debate the tool before they agree on the result.
These are not isolated software complaints. They are signs that the work, ownership, or information supporting it needs attention. Know the Organization First begins there.
